Saloni received her bachelor's degree in Fashion Styling and Image Design at Pearl Academy, New Delhi, India. During her four years, she explored many different topics within Fashion Studies and worked in various roles in the industry, one of which was working in Bollywood's costume department for several feature films. That experience led her to realize that Costume Design was her calling. To further develop her skills and study the art form extensively, she pursued an MFA in Design for Theater and Entertainment with a specialization in Costume Design from the School of Theater, Film, and Television (TFT) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
As an international designer, scholar, and educator, Saloni brings to the table her diverse background, experience of working in the industry of two continents, and education from different schools of design that trained her in the distinct traditional design practices of the East and the West. She acknowledges a broad view of culture and embeds that in her practice. Her creative projects can be found at www.salmahajan.work.
Saloni has worked in Bollywood's costume department, designed ballet performances, styled advertisements and celebrities, and worked as a fashion event assistant for fashion weeks. Her experience has broadened to theatre, dance, music videos, and more films in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and North Carolina. Furthermore, her expertise lies in working with technology. During the pandemic, Saloni successfully designed costumes for an immersive theater and augmented reality (AR) project that was filmed in a geodesic 360-degree dome at Intel Studios. She has also curated an exhibition. As a part of the American Institute of Indian Studies Summer Student Fellowship for Digital Projects, Saloni curated and designed an exhibition for the Virtual Museum of Images and Sounds: "Changing Iconography, Changing Identity: Images of Uma in Chola Bronze Sculpture."
Saloni specializes in Costume Design, and her core aims are to gain recognition for the field in the industry/academia and educate future artists and performance-makers. Much of her research is presented at conferences across the globe. Her interest uniquely combines the study of the arts, humanities, and sciences with a specialization in costume, fashion, visual art, culture, the body, performance, and emerging technology. She teaches how to work with and understand dress in its relationship to the body within many interdisciplinary sites and studies. Saloni can teach topics not only in Costume Design - History, Fashion, Global Dress, Craft, Construction, and Computer-Aided Design but also theory courses in Performance Studies, Fashion Studies, Cinema, Theatre, and Dance. She is also trained to be an educator of Graphic Design, South Asian Studies, Art History, Religion, Language - Hindi, Women Studies, Gender studies, and more.
